Ozone hole in 2021 was relatively large and long-lasting. I suppose that its presence is actually triggered by weather pattern. Antarctic is encircled during winter by strong low pressure systems (finaly cyclones) therefore the air is pushed away from the center (above Antarctic), there is not enough oxygen to form ozone. Higher temperature of ocean in relation to low temperature of Antarctic drive this pattern. It means that in warmer world we can see more ozone layer loss. Recent winter was many deep lows (cyclones) in Northern Hemisphere ass well. Apparently it is high concentration of methane in upper atmosphere that make thing worse. It could be a vicious circle as ozone presence is needed in atmosphere for hydroxyl radical to occur which according to scientist's is shortening methane live in atmosphere. Recent research published in nature: Climate Change favours large seasonal loss of Arctic ozone, published in 23 June 2021 doi.org/10.1038/s41467-021-24089-6 shows that Earth rising temp makes ozone loss worse. |
